Organic Yacon 500G
Description
-
Plant: Features a large herbaceous perennial bush growing up to 6 to 10 feet tall, with broad, heart-shaped hairy green leaves and small daisy-like yellow flowers.
-
Tubers and Flesh: Forms a cluster of two root types under the soil: small propagation corms near the surface and large, smooth, subterranean storage tubers below. The storage tubers have tan-to-purplish-brown outer skin protecting a translucent, pale yellow-to-amber, water-rich flesh.
-
Origin: Native to the Andean mountain regions of South America, now cultivated across sub-tropical and cool tropical highland regions worldwide.
-
Climate: Thrives best in mild, warm-to-cool microclimates (18°C to 25°C) and tropical highlands like Cameron Highlands; requires protection from hard frost and severe lowland drought.
-
Soil: Prefers deep, rich, loose, well-draining sandy loam or loamy soil with abundant organic matter and a neutral pH (6.0–7.0) to allow clean expansion of the large root tubers.
-
Culinary: Primarily enjoyed raw as a fresh fruit or root vegetable; peeled and eaten fresh, sliced into fruit salads, stir-fried lightly in Asian dishes to maintain crunch, boiled into clear nourishing soups, or processed into low-glycemic sweet syrup (yacon syrup).
-
Nutritional: Rich in fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and inulin—prebiotic fibers that pass unabsorbed through the upper digestive tract, acting as a natural sweetener that supports gut microbiome health, digestive regularity, and low-glycemic dietary management.
