Description
-
Plant: Features small, delicate, teardrop to broad oval leaves attached to thin, succulent stems, usually harvested as whole young micro-bunches complete with soft roots.
-
Foliage and Stems: The leaves are paper-thin, soft, and vibrant light green (or green with subtle reddish-purple veins in red cultivars), while the stems are tender, juicy, and completely edible without trimming.
-
Origin: Native to tropical Asia and widely cultivated across Southeast Asia, India, and Africa as a staple warm-weather leafy green.
-
Climate: Thrives in hot, humid tropical lowlands with high temperatures, abundant sunlight, and frequent rainfall.
-
Soil: Prefers rich, loose, well-draining loamy or alluvial soil high in organic matter, requiring consistent soil moisture to encourage rapid leaf sprouting.
-
Culinary: Exceptionally quick-cooking; commonly tossed into clear garlic soups (sayur bening), lightly stir-fried with garlic or anchovies, blanched for pecel or gado-gado salads, or cooked into baby food purées due to its tenderness.
-
Nutritional: Extremely rich in iron, calcium, magnesium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and dietary fiber, making it an excellent vegetable for boosting hemoglobin levels and overall digestive health.
